It Starts With Who You Are

Doing something — anything — successfully in the world requires a solid foundation.

What is that foundation?

It’s you.

It’s being clear on who you are, what you do, and why you are doing it.

I’ve been chatting with some of my favorite coach friends and mentors and I’m noticing a trend, at least among the tribe of deep thinkers I hang out with.

I see that out in the world so much of the focus is on how you get stuff done (which I love, don’t get me wrong) and how to have a plug-and-play business or project or widget (not so much), but there isn’t much of a focus on WHO you are, WHAT you care about, and WHY you are doing what you are doing (which I love even more). The focus instead is on how much money you can you make and how fast can you make it, or other more practical, surface level implementation tools.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

But unless you have the foundation in place, unless you’ve claimed your identity and know who you are and who you want to be, all the implementation and practical tools in the world will not serve you.

It starts with who you are.

Hear more on this subject on my upcoming Dreamification Radio broadcast this Saturday, June 18th on claiming your creative identity.

  1. Hi Jenna,

The world of business is all backwards. Who you are and why you are who you are needs to be front and center, yet in our fake world of work it gets pushed behind business plans and professionalism and masks all the other BS we associate with work.

Work needs to be revolutionized and humanized. Then you’ll see folks caring about the world.

What good is a lifestyle if it destroys life?

    Good stuff as usual!

  2. Jen Chisel says:

As someone who has only recently been discovering who I am, this strikes a chord. All my young life was focused on “what” I would become, I believed I needed to become “someone.” Who that “someone” was I have no idea but there I was striving for what I would be someday.

Funny, I got to my someday (my first career-type job) and almost immediately I felt there was something very wrong with the picture. It was like waking from a trance and feeling lost in space! Intuitively I began asking the question “who am I?” but at that time, I didn’t have the proper tools or resources so I bounced around like a pinball. Not until I connected with proper resources – wonderful, caring people like Jenna :) – have I finally been able to discover all the awesomeness that is ME!!

I’m still a work in progress in terms of who I am (cuz I’m a pretty darn complex woman with more facets than a diamond – hee hee!) but I’m so much happier and feeling much more comfortable in the world.

Why isn’t there a “Who Am I 101” class in high school?

Jenna, this was very thought provoking and I appreciate the poke!
